Carrigtwohill Schools Folklore Project Announces Winning Class

Scoil Chlochair Mhuire’s 5th Class Carrigtwohill, Co. Cork – September 18, 2024 The Carrigtwohill Schools Folklore Project is a collaborative effort to preserve and celebrate our rich cultural heritage, The project is part of the Haritage and Culture Strand of Carrigtwohill’s resident written C2H2040 plan, acknowledging the voice of youth in recording our shared heritage. we are delighted to announce the winners of the 2024 Schools folklore collection. The project saw enthusiastic participation from 5th class students across all three primary schools in Carrigtwohill, with exceptional contributions from each class. All of the participating schools followed a format inspired by the original 1930s Irish Folklore Schools Collection, using similar Topic lists to gather local stories and traditions.

The winning class, 5th class students from Scoil Chlochair Mhuire, stood out with their beautifully decorated manuscript covers and the rich, diverse folklore they collected. Their work reflected the global influences within Carrigtwohill today, with stories and traditions gathered not only from Irish families but from communities all around the world.

As recognition for their superb efforts, the winning class will be treated to a special prize: a class trip to Fota Wildlife Park’s new state-of-the-art education centre. The students will have the opportunity to learn about Ireland’s native plants and animals, further deepening their appreciation of the natural world and its place in Irish heritage. Sharing the Folklore with the Community The folklore collected through this project is intended to be shared with the wider community. With the appropriate funding, the collection will be published in print, allowing families to enjoy these stories for generations to come. Additionally, a community event will be planned to celebrate the new collection and revisit the 1930s folklore collection. This event will provide an opportunity to honor the cultural richness of Carrigtwohill, past and present.

The Carrigtwohill Schools Folklore Project, in partnership with the Carrigtwohill Community Council, extends its deepest thanks to Fota Wildlife Park for donating this wonderful prize and to High Street Books for donating the manuscripts that the children used to record the folklore. We would also like to thank the students, teachers, and principals for their hard work and dedication in making this project a success.
